But I have read many books, a few by well-known authors, where POV changes aren't smooth and really throw me from the story.Theresehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12730726123190273016noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-5278541229631698312011-03-13T19:34:28.016-05:002011-03-13T19:34:28.016-05:00We have to keep reminding ourselves not to head ho...We have to keep reminding ourselves not to head hop. When I read a novel and the POV is wonky or all over the page, it really annoys me. I recently finished a long novel by an author who also owns a publishing co. It had the worst head-hopping I've ever seen--real whiplash--and the guidelines for the publisher states--pure POV--no headhopping. I'm still scratching my head over that one.
Thanks for the tips--I can always use them--CeliaAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16272417114895975742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-58670871389006079512011-03-12T09:55:40.756-06:002011-03-12T09:55:40.756-06:00POV is probably the most discussed writing techniq...POV is probably the most discussed writing technique ever. So much of what was expected has changed over the years and yet agents and editors still use the old 'don'ts' to get a rejection out.
Head hopping, even changing from first person to third is fine with me as long as the author knows they intend to do it and do it well enough so that the reader is not confused. Good, clear writing in a flowing style will win over all objections.Patghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01046665022709722606noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-45476891495912133432011-03-11T21:26:49.644-06:002011-03-11T21:26:49.644-06:00I had never heard of "head-hopping" unti...I had never heard of "head-hopping" until I started having editors accuse me of it. Since many of the books I love to read have had scenes like that, I wanted to know why they could do it, and not me. I guess it takes a certain finesse to do it seamlessly. I'm trying to learn.
Great post on a subject very near and dear to authors' hearts.Fiona McGierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13495707848048468428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-72086970652291853072011-03-11T20:40:19.835-06:002011-03-11T20:40:19.835-06:00From one Michigander to another - thanks for the a...From one Michigander to another - thanks for the advice, Jane. I just finished reading a book that was an enjoyable story, and would have been even more enjoyable if the point of view shifts had been more clearly defined. The way the story was formatted made me feel like I was being jerked back and forth. You make some great points here.Linda Rettstatthttp://www.lindarettstatt..comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-6328791091186994842011-03-11T11:42:35.798-06:002011-03-11T11:42:35.798-06:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Linda Rettstatthttp://www.lindarettstatt.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071578858787530823.post-57580980261614555122011-03-11T03:50:15.226-06:002011-03-11T03:50:15.226-06:00Great post, Jane!
